There are a lot of things you will learn during your time in photography school, but when you get stared in the real world you will soon realize that they forgot to teach you the most important aspect of your career and that is how to make money. I believe they are so focused on teaching you about the history, technology, techniques, etc. that they forget to cover the most important aspect. Which is why today we have so many graduates who have a diploma in photography but are completely clueless on how they can get started.
Do not get me wrong, photography school is the best place to learn, as the things you will learn there will stay with you for years to come. And if you are lucky enough you will be able to start your career or get a sense of direction while still at photography school. There are many great photographers that starts when they were still learning, and have taken the concepts and developed them beautifully.
If you have skills, and you feel that you can work on them in the coming years, then start to brand yourself.
However, all of us cannot rely on luck and the perfect opportunity. That allows us to showcase our abilities. As I have met so many talented photographers that are simply running around trying to figure out how to make money and make ends meet after photography school. In my opinion, the sooner you get started the better. If you have skills, and you feel that you can work on them in the coming years, then start to brand yourself. Keep in mind that everyone starts from the bottom, and it does not matter if you have a diploma or not. There is no easy road when it comes to making your space in the industry, as you are in competition with thousands of others who are chasing the same dream.
This way when you start photography school you will have some techniques and skills under your sleeve that you can work on. However, keep in mind that there is no course on how you can make money with these skills, and the diploma. They can give you a general idea and sense of direction, but in reality, you are pretty much on your own. Fortunately, when you do make it, you know that it was all you. You are the reason behind your success and all that you have achieved in your life. So hold your head high, as your time might have come yet, but if you keep on working hard and are skilled, and dedicated to making it, then there is nothing that can stand in your way.
You might be going through a wrong patch trying to figure out how to make money after photography school, but this is the time when no job is too small. Try to get as many gigs as possible, and keep on building yourself as a brand. You might not see it yet, but soon these worries will be a thing of the past.
