The Best School for Fashion Photography
There is a lot of debate about what is the best school for fashion photography, and in my opinion, the way to get started is by getting a Ph.D. in hard knocks. As there is nothing that can offer you better results or give you better training than painful feedback. It is a great wakeup call, and help you realized that you need to make a change. There is no point denying the fact that the fashion industry is harsh and cold. That is not because they are cold, it is because they were once treated the same way by someone else, and the experience really got them going. There is no room for errors when you are working in a cut-throat industry.
[pullquote]It might not be easy to take and believe me it’s not; but once you get over the initial shock and are dedicated. Then you will pick yourself back up, and hit back harder. No, I do not mean literally. I mean that you work on your skills and build yourself a career either way.[/pullquote]
I have been working as a professional fashion photographer in LA for years now, and if I was being absolutely honest. I would say that my hard knocks (negative) experiences have helped me shape my career in a better manner. As there is nothing better than a harsh reality check. As it allows you to really take a step back, review yourself and your work. So you can work on the aspects you lack in. It might not be easy to take and believe me it’s not; but once you get over the initial shock and are dedicated. Then you will pick yourself back up, and hit back harder. No, I do not mean literally. I mean that you work on your skills and build yourself a career either way.
So if you are looking to get started in the fashion photography business, you should know that you will get a few hard knocks along your way, and it is how you deal with them; that will help you shape your career. If you look at history, you will see how many great photographers had to face rejection. It was not because they were bad at what they did, it was just that at that point they did not work with their full potential. And the negative experience really hit them back, so they could come up with something that would blow away the world.
It is true that it all comes down to dedication. So as long as you are dedicated and committed, then there is no force in the world that can stop you. And these negative experience will just become a lesson, that can help you learn a great deal more.So the next time someone gives you a harsh feedback, take it gracefully. Review your work, and then work on being better. But keep in mind that there are a few people who will never be satisfied with any work, so you should know your worth. As there is no one that should have the ability to make you feel like you do not own a single skill, so try to keep a healthy balance between self-confidence, and room for criticism.
