Life of a Fashion Photographer:
No matter how much you love your job, there will be a few things that you dislike about it. It has nothing to do with how much you love your job, and how your dreams have come true. It is impossible to love each aspect of it, but with time you learn to love the small aspects that drive you insane. In a recent interaction with an old friend of mine, I was asked to list down the best and worst of fashion photography. To be honest that was the first time I had thought about these aspects as the worst of the industry. Maybe it is just the way I think, but I felt the need to share my insight with all my readers. So here it the best and worst of fashion photography in my opinion.
Worst of Fashion Photography:
Guarantee – There are no guarantees when it comes to fashion photography when you start out you live from one paycheck to another. As you still need to build a clientele, and there is no constant flow of work. There will be days or weeks when you work for minimum wage, or barely get any work.
Self Start – There are no shortcuts in fashion photography, you have to earn your space, and it can take months or years to make sure that you get noticed. Which means, in the beginning, you will be doing everything yourself, as you do not have a reliable team.
Equipment – No matter how good you or, or how badly you wish to buy new equipment you simply cannot, as your equipment are your investments, and you need to plan and build them over time.
Best of Fashion Photography:
Dream – when your career starts to take off you finally feel that you are starting to live your dream. With each passing day, you will feel happier and content with your life, that you are living a life you have chosen for yourself.
Freedom – As a professional fashion photographer you have the advantage of work freely and at your own time. There is no fixed time schedule you have to follow each day, and every day bring a new routine.
Potential – You know you have the potential, and now you finally have the chance to show off your potential to the world. So they are able to enjoy your work, as it was meant to be.
Mystery – You never know where you will be heading in a few hours, days, or weeks. As there are endless possibilities around the world. Allowing you to enjoy the best that life has to offer, and allowing you to take advantage of the fact that you get to choose how your career shapes out.
Difference – Many people do not know this, but I got started as a professional fashion photographer because I wanted to make a difference with my images. I want to try different skills and techniques, that will allow me to hold the grounding concepts while allowing me to offer something spectacular.
