For those of you who are not familiar with lookbook photography, it is basically a collection of photographs that are compiled together to show off a photographic style, model, clothing, or stylist. A lookbook is a great way to showcase any one of those, but the only one who gains the most out of the lookbook is the photographer. I have worked on many lookbooks myself, and can tell you I have received many clients saying they saw my lookbook and were just inspired. So you see a lookbook is not just about what the image shows, it’s also about the photographer who takes the images that are used in the lookbook.
[pullquote] I wish I could sum it up in words how amazing the experience is, and how pumped I am every time a client asks me for a lookbook. [/pullquote]
The thing is, when you look at any lookbook and see gorgeous images, there comes a point when you realise that it was the efforts of the photographer that actually allowed the images to come forward. There would have been no way these images would have looked and felt the same if some amuture took them. Because there is a lot of work and effort that goes into creating a perfect lookbook.
Some people might just flip through it feeling it’s a normal book with pictures, but only someone with the love for beauty, and eye for detail will be able to see the work that goes into the image. And how forms the entire lookbook. So if you are really interested in showing off your photography skills, then try to get started with lookbook photography.
I still take on clients that wish for me to take on lookbooks, as it is not just about showcasing my skills anymore, I just love working on them. It’s something I thoroughly enjoy, as it’s not just a few clicks here and there, it’s an entire range. The best part for me is that the entire band comes together. I get to pick a few models, or get to know the brand models, which is a great experience as it allows me to get their ideas.
Then I sit down with the stylist, and we go over their ideas, and get a sense of how things are going to be in terms of styling the models, what accessories will be to enhance the look, etc. So we can finally move onto the hair and makeup team, and tell them what the shoot is about, and how the look needs to be.
Once the basics are covered, we get started on working out a location. Is it going to be indoors, or outdoors. What kind of background will be required, what is the best location for the shot. What props can we add, how should the place be designed like.
And so much more. These were just to give you an idea of how crazy things get when so many people are involved. It might be like any other day as a professional fashion photographer, but as a lookbook requires a number of images, with a different range. I wish I could sum it up in words how amazing the experience is, and how pumped I am every time a client asks me for a lookbook.
