Becoming a Professional Fashion Photographer is Easily Impossible
When you ask a professional fashion photographer if you have what it takes they will probably give you a look, and tell you it’s not an easy job. Many people feel that it is because they are arrogant, and rude. However, let me share a small insight with you.
It is not because they are arrogant well, some of them might be. But it has nothing to do with you, it’s the question really. Everyone has a different opinion, and a different mindset, which ensures a different answer. Most of us are honestly, simply tired of the question. There aren’t enough answers in the world.
Over the years I have been asked my times what it takes to become a successful and professional fashion photographer. And I feel I have always fallen short, as I never had the right words to offer on the matter. Today, I feel like I will be able to shed more light on the matter.
[pullquote] Because passion is a fire that lights up your path. [/pullquote]
The thing is, becoming a professional fashion photographer is not something you rush, it’s not a race, and the person who gets to the finish line first is not the winner in this care. As a fashion photographer you are living the race every day, but make no mistake, as the finish line is the end of your career. So it’s not about how fast you were, how many turns you nailed, and how fast the pit stop was as it’s all about the drive.
Your drive is your journey, and instead of getting to the finish line, you want to mark down successful laps. It’s not about speed, it’s about precision.
Most individuals that enter the field treat it like any other game, they feel the sooner they get to the finish line the better. And that is the crucial mistake that breaks and ends their career. As there should be no rush to get to the finish line, as long as you are driving steady, and gaining points.
In my opinion, if you keep your eyes on the road, and focus on achieving quality points, rather than simply finishing as many laps as possible in the fasted time. Only then will you be able to achieve success in this business. It is not as easy as it looks, and it does not only take practice and natural talent, it takes hours and hours of studying and practice. I honestly cannot tell you how much time goes into the theory, as you need to familiarize yourself with the various aspects of fashion photography, you need to learn the history. As only then you will be able to understand that passion that runs so high. Each moment needs to be lived and experienced, and you must learn from your mistakes and others.
One thing most people conveniently forget is, what it really takes is passion. Because passion is a fire that lights up your path. Otherwise, in my opinion it is easily impossible to become a professional and successful fashion photographer.
